FAQs

How do I fix my pet?

Thanks to  grant from the Maine Community Foundation, we are offering Feline Spay and Neuter vouchers for $40 per cat to those who are residents of Franklin County. Here’s how it works:  Make your appointment at Falls Road Veterinary Clinic and be sure to mention you will be using a voucher.  Call us here at the Franklin County Animal Shelter to schedule an appointment time to purchase a voucher with cash or card up to 90 days before the appointment. The voucher will cover the  cost of the operation, not including blood testing or vaccinations. For more information, call us at (207) 778-2638.

Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have the funds to offer a low-cost spay/neuter voucher for dogs.

Another option for those outside of Franklin County, is Help Fix ME: Maine's Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program. You may be eligible for the State's low cost spay/neuter program.  Call 1-800-367-1317 or (207) 287-7621, or email  ACF.helpfixme@maine.gov if you receive or are eligible for one of the following programs:

  • Food Stamps
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Social Security Disability (SSD)
  • Maine Care (Medicaid)

How do I surrender my animal?

We realize that sometimes life circumstances change, and you may be forced to surrender your pet. Cat surrenders are accepted from within our contracted towns, as shelter capacity allows, for a $30 surrender fee per cat. Dog surrenders are accepted from within our contracted towns, as shelter capacity allows, provided they do not have a bite history, and they can pass a temperament test performed by one of our qualified Animal Care staff, for a $50 surrender fee per dog.

Are you a "No Kill" shelter?

The Franklin County Animal Shelter is considered a "No Kill" shelter. This means we do our very best to adopt all of our animals into happy forever homes, and we never euthanize animals because of a lack of space.
